A popular man from Melksham died after jumping into the River Avon in Bath, a coroner’s court was told today.

Maurice Eyles, 49, of Bowmans Court, Melksham, was recovered from the water near Broad Quay, Bath, on July 1 last year by emergency services personnel.

Paramedics attended the scene and he was rushed to the Royal United Hospital in Bath but died there later the same day.

Avon Coroner Dr Peter Harrowing recorded a narrative verdict, saying that Mr Eyles suffered from Schizoaffective disorder and ischemic heart disease.

Recording his conclusion, Dr Harrowing said it was not known what Mr Eyles’ intention was when jumping into the river.

Mr Eyles was an inventor who was well-known to residents and High Street businesses in Melksham.

He had studied business and finance and performing arts at Swindon College and left behind a partner, Louise Wood.

After his death, more than 75 people raised over £1,275 from a crowdfunding appeal on the justgiving website to give him a good send-off.
