ST GEORGE’S C of E Primary in Semington has recently been described as one of the best performing primary schools in the county and has been congratulated by Wiltshire Council for its results from last summer.

In a letter from Helean Hughes, director of education and skills at Wiltshire Council, St George’s Primary School was congratulated on the “sustained commitment, hard work and success of the staff, governors and pupils” since the school was put into special measures in March 2017.

The letter went on to say: “I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you on the recently validated outcomes achieved by your pupils in 2018, which are amongst the best primary schools in Wiltshire.”

The school’s end of Key Stage 2 SATs results saw 78 per cent of Year 6 pupils achieve the expected standard in reading, writing and maths combined, compared to a national average of 64 per cent.

Thirty-three percent of those pupils achieved a higher than expected standard.

Head of School Pip Hunt said: “We have worked hard to increase the children’s enjoyment of school by enriching the curriculum with lots more trips and inviting visitors into the school to inspire the children.

“We have also taken into account the children’s interests when we decide what topics to study. At St George’s, we have lots of boys in our youngest class for example, and so we have tailored their learning to fit with their interests like transport and superheroes. We also believe passionately in having high-quality playtime and lunchtime experiences for the children, as play is a vital part of the children’s day, and have improved outdoor equipment.”
