ONE crew from the Trowbridge fire station created a safe cordon after a mains gas pipe ruptured in Trowbridge at lunchtime today .

The gas board came out quickly to deal with the incident, which happened when gas began to leak in the rear garden of a domestic property in Newtown.

The gas leak had started leaking around 12.37pm following a main gas pipe becoming ruptured.

The fire crew assisted and liaised with the gas board engineers by creating a safe cordon prior to the prompt arrival of the engineers to repair the ruptured pipe.

A spokesperson for Wales & West Utilities said: "We were alerted to reports of a smell of gas in the Newtown area of Trowbridge today and immediately sent an engineer to the scene.

"On arrival, we found that a gas pipe running beneath the garden of a property had been damaged, causing a minor leak. Working as safely and as quickly as possible, our engineer isolated the pipe and repaired the leak.

"Wales & West Utilities has a team of more than 900 trained and experienced engineers to help serve the 7.5 million people across the south west of England and Wales that rely on its gas emergency and pipeline services.
