NO local builders have come forward to give a quote for refurbishing Trowbridge Park’s public toilets, disappointing town councillors who had hoped to spend their money in the town.

The five local builders who were approached were not interested in the work, councillors learned on Tuesday night.

Since then the town council has been talking to public toilet specialists Healthmatic about the specification of the refurbishment and a full quote from them is expected to be put before the next council meeting in May.

The quote will include an option for a 50p entry charge and the council will need to consider what the opening times should be.

The council has also received a quote from Castle Place for opening its toilets on Sunday and earlier in the morning on other days of the week. This would cost£17,500 per year, so those loos could be used as an alternative or in conjunction with the park public toilets.

At the meeting, Cllr Edward Kirk said: “I am disappointed that no local builders are interested in looking at working on the toilets.

“Trowbridge is the county town and we should not be a town without public toilets. I would like to remind councillors that Bradford on Avon has two toilets and Devizes still maintains public toilet provision and this needs to be taken into consideration when we look at the matter in detail.”

The town council is still keen to hear from local builders who would like to quote for the refurbishment of the park’s toilet block near the bandstand.

A final decision on the refurbishment and whether to pay to use the toilets in Castle Place will be made at the next meeting on May 21.
