SWINDON Town manager Richie Wellens will not look beyond the current season while his side remain in with a mathematical change of qualifying for the League Two play-offs – and is sure there are still a few twists and turns to come.

Town head to second-placed Bury on Saturday sitting 10th in the table with eight games to go, seven points below Exeter City in the last of the play-off places.

Although currently outsiders to finish inside the top seven, Wellens is well aware that anything is possible between now and May 4.

Back in his playing days, Wellens helped Blackpool qualify for the fourth-tier play-offs by a single point during the 2000-01 campaign, with the Seasiders then mounting a successful charge through the end-of-season battle to win promotion.

With Wellens still mulling over whether or not to offer fresh deals to some out-of-contract players, the temptation is there for the Town boss to experiment over the closing weeks of the season.

However, as long as his side still have something to play for, a march up the table will remain the priority.

“I have to get the balance right,” said Wellens.

“We have still got a small chance, so it would be stupid to give away that small chance just because I want to look at different players.

“I am a big believer in thinking that one always sneaks in at the end. I did it as a player, I snuck in on the very last day and ended up getting promoted at the Millennium Stadium.

“People panic and get nervous, and teams beneath them play with a freedom because they have got nothing to lose.

“I am sure sixth and seventh spots will change – and I am hoping it can be in our favour.”

Town put in a classy display to ruthlessly sweep aside Morecambe 4-0 at home last weekend, although an altogether different challenge awaits against Bury.

The Shakers are the top scorers in League Two and are on a 14-match unbeaten run, having not lost in the league since Boxing Day.

Although wary a stiff test awaits at Gigg Lane, given their play-off predicament, Wellens says Swindon will go all out for victory.

“I am expecting the same quality on the ball because we have got a way of playing that I think suits us,” said Wellens.

“It is important that when the ball changes hands, we react in the right way because Bury are a good team. They score a lot of goals, but they also concede quite a few as well.

“There is no point in going there for a point, we have to try to win.

“I have seen quite a lot of their players over a number of years, so we should be going up there with no fear.”
