POLICE are appealing for witnesses and dash cam footage after a driver failed to stop following serious crash on the A36 near Standerwick Cross this morning.

A woman has been airlifted to Southmead Hospital in Bristol with a serious head injury after the two-vehicle crash on the A36.

The other driver involved in the smash failed to stop and police are keen to hear from anyone who witnesses the accident or have dash cam footage.

The A36 between the A361 at Beckington and the A3098 Chalcot Lane near Dead Maids at Chapmanslade, was closed after the accident.

Police initially said it could take up to three hours to clear but a Highways England spokesman said there is no estimated time for the road."

Highways England previously took to Twitter to state there was approximately 2.4 miles of congestion travelling northbound.

An Avon and Somerset Police spokesperson said the woman suffered a "serious head injury" and was airlifted to Southmead Hospital. The road remains closed and motorists should avoid the area.

In a statement, the police said: “We’re appealing for witnesses following a serious fail to stop road traffic collision in Somerset this morning.

“We were called to reports of a serious collision on the A36 at Standerwick Cross, Frome at about 10am. It happened at the junction of the A36 with the B3009.

“A woman had to be released from one of the two vehicles at the scene. She suffered serious head injuries and was taken by air ambulance to Southmead Hospital.

“The road remains closed while collision investigators carry out an examination of the scene. Motorists are asked to avoid the area.

“We believe that a third car was involved in the collision but failed to stop and left the scene. It is believed to be a black, grey or silver car.

“We’d like to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident, especially anyone who may have captured the collision on a dash cam.”

Anyone with information about the collision is advised to call the police on 101 and quote log 0241 of today.

A South Western Ambulance Service NHS Trust spokeswoman confirmed paramedics attended the incident this morning.

She said: "We were called at 10am about a two-vehicle road traffic incident on the A36 in the area of Standerwick.

"We sent a team of paramedics to attend the incident. A female patient was conveyed to hospital by air ambulance."
