THE long march taking dedicated environmental campaigners from all over the country to London passed through Wiltshire this week.

Walkers arrived in Bradford on Avon on Sunday, before continuing their march another nine miles to Devizes on Monday, on to All Cannings on Tuesday, then to Pewsey, Burbage and Hungerford, en route to a rally in London on April 15.

This south west walk, part of the Extinction Rebellion Earth March, began in Cardigan, Wales, and local Wiltshire walkers joined the dedicated few who have been walking for days.

The marchers were joined by Roger Jones and John Pearce, two local members of Climate Friendly Bradford on Avon, which has been campaigning on this topic for 12 years.

Mr Jones said: “I admire what they are doing, and joined the march today to support them.”

Mr Pearce said: “What ER is doing is fantastic – the least I could do is support them for the day.”

“It’s been amazing,” said Blake Eley, who joined the walk in Port Talbot and has covered around 100 miles in 10 days. “I have met so many kind people and like-minded people.”

Mr Eley said he was inspired by the campaign of Extinction Rebellion, a new organisation pressing for the Government to make Britain a zero carbon country and to protect the environment from degradation and mass extinction.

He said: “After I found out about ER and what they are doing as a movement, I really wanted to be part of it, to make changes as a collective.”
