LOCAL MPs have said they hope the Easter break can be used as a time for engaging in talks as the latest movements in Brexit unravelled.

Last week European Union leaders granted the UK a six-month extension to Brexit, after late-night talks in Brussels, making the new deadline October 31.

European Council President Donald Tusk said his "message to British friends" was "please do not waste this time".

The UK must now hold European elections in May, or leave on June 1 with no deal.

Theresa May, who had wanted a shorter delay, said the UK would still aim to leave the EU as soon as possible.

Mrs May tweeted: "We must now press on at pace with our efforts to reach a consensus on a deal that is in the national interest."

MP for South West Wiltshire Dr Andrew Murrison said: “I hope the government and Labour are using the Easter break to engage in talks in good faith in an attempt to honour the people’s referendum we’ve already had and to give most people most of what they want.

"However, my expectations are modest as Mr Corbyn is likely to exploit the situation to increase the chances of an early general election, sadly.”
