CHIILDREN, families and staff at St Mary’s Primary School Broughton Gifford, have been cycling, scooting and walking to school as part of this year’s Big Pedal.

The Big Pedal is a national competition established by Sustrans to encourage school children to cycle and scoot to school.

For two weeks every year families are encouraged to ditch the cars and bring their bikes and scooters to school.

St Mary’s is a small village school with huge enthusiasm for cycling and scooting. On the last day of the competition they were 79th nationally out of 609 small schools and in 10th position in the South West.

Teacher Tamsin Daddow said : “We’re so proud of the effort and enthusiasm of the children and their families in supporting this initiative.””We’ve taken part before but this has been our best performance to date. There has been a real buzz at the start and end of each day with the children actively travelling to and from school.

“Each day we have randomly chosen a bike or scooter to attach the Big Pedal padlock to and the winner has chosen a treat.”Before The Big Pedal on average there would be around 15 children scooting or cycling. During the event we often saw over half the school doing so. An amazing effort from our families.”Children were also invited to decorate their bikes and scooters with an Easter theme, with a child from each class winning an Easter egg as a prize. The winners were Charlie, Lola, Sam and Lilli.
