Trowbridge players are bringing to the stage classic black comedy Ladykillers for their Spring production.

Ladykillers is stage adaptation written by Graham Linehan based on the Ealing comedy film of the same name.

Although the play was premiered only a few years ago the stage is set in the 1950s and revolves around an elderly widow Mrs Wilberforce.

Mrs Wilberforce is a sweet little old lady who rents out a room in her lopsided house to Marcus, a professor of music.

She is blissfully unaware that he is actually a maniacal criminal who is putting together against a gang of misfits who will stop at nothing to commit the heist of their careers.

Professor Marcus and his gang, posing as members of a string quintet, rent rooms in the house.

The villains plot to involve her, unwittingly, in Marcus’ brilliantly conceived heist job.

Mrs Wilberforce played by Angelia Giddings likes to report suspicious behaviour to the police. Unaware of her reputation, the thief Professor Marcus the thieves pull off a bank robbery but slip up in front of the old woman as they try to escape.

The police are left stumped but Mrs Wilberforce becomes wise to their ruse and Marcus concludes that there is only one way to keep the old lady quiet. With only her parrot, General Gordon, to help her, Mrs Wilberforce is alone with five desperate men.

Agreed that they need to murder her, the bumbling crooks wind up double-crossing each other and slowly killing themselves off.

Ladykillers opens at The Arc Theatre on Wednesday May 8 and runs to the Saturday.
