OVER £400 was raised at a charity car wash held at Trowbridge fire station on Saturday in aid of the Fire Fighters Charity.

Cars queued up as firefighters got out their sponges and washed cars in return for donations.

At 12pm, the crew downed their sponges to join colleagues from across the country in a minute’s silence as part of the national Firefighters’ Memorial Day commemorations.

A spokesman from Trowbridge fire station said: "Despite a couple of shouts we managed to raise £482 for the Fire Fighters Charity.

"Thankyou to everyone who attended."

The Fire Fighters Charity provides help to serving and retired personnel, their widows or widowers and children through the provision of sheltered accommodation, recuperative facilities, rehabilitation and therapy, as well as giving financial support to those who need it.

The charity works with 11,000 beneficiaries every year at a cost of £9 million per year.
