JENNA Blundell warmed up for the England Athletics Championships in Bedford this weekend with a confidence-boosting victory at the South West Schools’ Track & Field Championships, writes KEVIN FAHEY.

The 18-year-old Staverton junior international multi-eventer enjoyed the luxury of just focusing on two events at the Exeter Arena on Saturday – her favoured 100m hurdles and the long jump.

Already rated fourth in the UK U20 women’s rankings, Blundell set a legal best time of 13.85secs to win the senior girls’ hurdles on her final appearance in the championships.

Blundell’s coach, Julie Alexander, said: “Jenna is in great form and I think we will see a big performance from her at Bedford.”

If Blundell can do that and secure a top-two finish, then she will be a strong contender for a place in the GB team for the European Junior Championships in Sweden later this summer, but the competition will be intense.

Having taken gold in the sprint hurdles, Blundell then switched to the long jump and added a silver medal with a leap of 5.62m.

In third, and claiming a big personal best, was St Laurence School student Robyn Ellison, who improved from 5.44m to 5.61m.

Hilperton’s Rory Howorth also took a break from his multi-event ambitions to focus on the senior boys’ long jump, and he won that event with a leap of 6.99m.

Trowbridge-based Marcin Olech, who was representing Avon as he is at college in Bristol, was third.

Two other senior winners at Exeter were Avon Valley Runners’ Max Davis, who was in the Avon team, and Dauntsey’s Femi Akinbobola in the 400m.

Having equalled his PB of 1.85m to win the Wiltshire Schools’ title the week before, all-rounder Peter Adeosun (St Augustine’s) improved his best to 1.87m for a bronze medal in the inter boys’ high jump. Adeosun was also fifth in the 100m hurdles in a legal PB of 14.40secs.

Club-mate Ransford Ako’Nai, from Devizes, was seventh in the inter boys’ long jump, and Will Scammell came sixth in the sprint hurdles.

In the throws, the Sheldon School pair of Owen Merrett and training partner James Viner finished third and fourth respectively in the inter boys’ hammer, with Viner going over 50m for the first time with a PB of 51.31m.
