The grim interior of Swindon Station half a century ago, not long before demolition and replacement
THIS was one of the views which greeted users of Swindon Station half a century ago.
The dilapidated state of the Victorian building was a frequent topic for complaint on the Adver’s letters page, and was even the subject of an article in a national broadsheet newspaper.
According to a caption taped to the back of the image in our archives, the large warped and peeling board attached to the left wall was put in place to hide the alarming state of the brickwork and plaster behind.
By 1969 plans were being made for the demolition which would take place three years later.
The old station was replaced by the new building, complete with office block, which is there today.
