FUNDRAISERS seeking donations for Scouting projects were among those who took part in the Shaw and Whitley Summer Fete on Saturday June 22.

They included Alison Candlin, who ran a ‘Walk of Pain’ challenge inviting visitors to walk barefoot across Lego bricks.

She was helping to raise funds for a Broughton Gifford and Holt Scouts trip to Tanzania to work on two community construction projects.

Alison’s husband, John Lister, is off to Tanzania in July to help build a medical centre in Emau Hill in the north of the country. She said: “He worked in Tanzania as a civil engineer 25 years and can’t wait to go back.”

Meanwhile, three of the group’s Explorer Scouts, Will Lister, 14, Will King, 15, and Olly Saunders, 15, are also helping to build some staff accommodation at Madaba High School, as part of a 100-strong expedition.

Local Scout Evan Hall, 14, from Whitley, also took a stall to sell t-shirts depicting the names of local villages to raise funds for his World Challenge expedition to Morocco on July 18.

Mum Claire Hall said: “So far, he’s raised £1,000 of the £2,000 he needs to go.”

The summer fete at Shaw Village Hall was opened by Melksham, Carnival Queen 21-year-old Naomi Marie.

It featured three hours of family fun and entertainment, including a prize raffle, fun dog show, Rock & Roll dancing, a Ukelele Band, a Choir, Street dancers, Classic Cars, BBQ, Licensed Bar, Tombola, Children’s games, bouncy castle, welly throwing and a treasure hunt.

There were also numerous trade stalls with everything from green products to crafts to pet care products.

Mike Booth, of fair organisers Community Action for Whitley and Shaw (CAWS) said: “We had around 800 visitors and raised around £1,500.

“It will to support local projects such the phone box library and play park improvements, as well as our participation in Wiltshire’s Best Kept Village competition.”
