THE Religious Education department at St Laurence School held a Holocaust Commemoration service for year nine students this month.
The service included readings and a poignant account from guest speaker Iris Segall, of her experiences growing up with parents who survived the Holocaust.
Following the service, pupils were lead out of the hall to place a stone onto a cairn in memory of the victims of the Holocaust. This will become part of a permanent Holocaust memorial based at St Laurence School.
RE teacher, Mrs Favali said: "It was important to introduce students to how people around the globe have been affected by genocide.
"Also what they, as citizens of the world can do today to promote an understanding of the dangers of apathy, fostering a willingness to stand up and speak out for those in need of justice and equality, whether that’s globally, nationally or within the school community."
