TEMPERATURES are expected to soar above 30C this afternoon in Swindon.

The Met office has predicted the mercury could hit 32 degrees in town.

And today could be the hottest day on record in Britain, with temperatures set to reach 39C in the London area.

But the Met Office urges people to stay safe during the hot weather.

Principal Environmental Public Health Scientist at Public Health England Owen Landeg said: “The extreme heat means that our bodies, especially our hearts and lungs have to work harder to maintain a normal temperature.

“This is why our advice focuses on reminding people to keep an eye on those who are most at risk, older people, those with underlying health conditions and very young children.

“The most important advice is to ensure they stay hydrated keep cool and keep their homes cool.”

But these scorching conditions means travellers could face delays and cancellations throughout the day.

Great Western Railway tweeted this morning: “With all time high temperatures forecast for today, we expect to run a reduced train service after mid-day. Trains which do run will be busier than normal and take longer because of speed restrictions.”

There are various places across Swindon for people to cool down including Coat Water Park, Cotswold Water Park, Lydiard Park, Lotmead Farm and more.
