ANIMALS of all shapes and sizes took centre stage in Trowbridge on Saturday when people turned up in droves to a farm open day.

There was everything from feathered friends in the shape of an owl to furry friends with floppy ears at Larkrise Community Farm’s bi-annual fete and open day.

Trowbridge Mayor David Cavill and town crier Trevor Heeks joined forces to cut a tape around what else but a straw bale to declare the farm fete open.

One of the highlights was 'One Man and his Gun Dogs', Stephen Harrison, from Codford, who put on a gun dog display with his dogs Poppy, Daisy and Tilley.

One visitor posted a message on a local social media site saying: "I just want to give a massive shout out to “one man and his gundogs” who was at Larkrise Community Farm today for their summer fete and dog show.

"Not only did he put on an outstanding performance with his beautiful dogs he had the welfare of all dogs there at heart."

Larkrise Community Farm manager Wendy Self added: "Obviously, the weather was on our side and we had more than 300 visitors.

"Everything went smoothly and the fete has been one of our most successful ever. We've managed to raise around £2,500 after expenses."

Mrs Self was in charge of carriage rides using her Welsh blue road cob Eros, who has lived on the farm for the past 19 years.

Other activities included a fun dog show, traditional games such as Hook a Duck, Splat the Rat, a coconut shy and skittles, as well crafts, cakes, plants and produce to keep families entertained.

Former community farm student Alan Jones, now in his mid-20s, who was helped by the farm in his teenage years, was on duty at the fete to help everything run smoothly.
