A 12-year-old cyclist who was airlifted to a Bristol hospital last week after an accident with a car in Trowbridge has been discharged and is now at home making a good recovery.

She was released from Bristol Royal Hospital for Children’s Hospital on Wednesday exactly one week after the accident on July 24.

Luckily, she was wearing a helmet and that saved her from suffering more serious head injuries in the collision.

Her family are now planning to a campaign to encourage more children to wear helmets while riding a bike, saying her injuries could have been ten times worse without one, and to raise funds for the Wiltshire Air Ambulance.

They posted a message on a local social media website saying: "Despite having to cancel their family holiday to France (should have left this evening) the family are looking forward to spending a quiet few weeks with friends and family back at home. They thank everyone for their kind words and wishes."

Hospital nursing staff withdrew sedation and took the girl off a ventilator earlier this week after she showed signs of improvement.

The family added: “She has no recollection of the event but when told, was concerned for the driver who she didn’t want to get into trouble."

Police are appealing for witnesses after the collision with a Toyota Aygo in Silver Street Lane at around 3.20pm on Wednesday, July 24.
