STUDENTS at a Trowbridge school took part in a poetry competition judged by published poet Dr Mike Johnson.

Key stage two pupils at The Grove Primary School, on Hazel Grove, spent a few weeks writing individual poems and practising a whole class poem written by a professional.

The individual poems were whittled down to two acts per class: one chosen by the children and one by the class teacher.

Bethan Mckenna, a reading TA, said: "On the day of the competition, each pupil performed their poems with great enthusiasm.

"The children wrote wonderfully creative poems about the passing seasons and the language they used was truly wonderful.

"The group poems were also remarkable with clear, confident performances.

"A big thank you goes to the Year 6 children who hosted the event and did a marvellous job."

Dr Mike Johnson, a poet from Trowbridge, helped judge the competition and performed one of his poems to the school.

He spoke about his wealth of experience in writing and his passion for poetry.

Dr Johnson also donated a copy of his newest book, ‘Zoink!’ to the school library.

The winners were: Lily for the children’s choice category, Melissa for the teacher’s choice and Alder Class for the group performance.
