Schools all around the county opened their doors early yesterday for A-Level students to pick up their eagerly-awaited results.

The Wiltshire Times visited schools to be with the pupils and teachers for the all-important opening of the envelopes.

At John of Gaunt School in Trowbridge, twin sisters Ashleigh and Eloise Sutton both achieved A* A* A grades.

Ashleigh will be heading off to Loughborough University to study Geography and Eloise will be studying biology at Birmingham University.

Ashleigh said: “We are both so pleased with our grades and to get into our universities.

“Tonight we are going out for a meal in Bath with our family to celebrate and we will also be going out with friends.”

Pupils at Clarendon Academy are celebrating a very successful set of results.

The school, which moved to the Acorn Trust 12 months ago, is delighted to announce that significant progress has been made in that time.

Pupil Ethan O’Gorman-Davies moved to Bristol halfway through his A-Levels, but continued to attend Clarendon and commuted on his motorcycle.

He said: “It is such a relief to have got the results I need.

“I will be going to Exeter University to study law.

“Commuting here has been a struggle in the winter but I wanted to stay here as my friends are here and the teaching at Clarendon is really good.”

Headteacher Rob Price confirmed that almost half of all results have been awarded grade B equivalent or higher, and that nearly all students have secured places at the destination of their choice.

He said: “This is a strong set of results for the school and shows we are making rapid progress.

“We have worked hard to provide a diverse, inclusive and challenging offer for students, and will continue to do so.

“For students in Trowbridge and beyond with high aspirations, we can offer first class teaching and a bright future”.

Teachers and pupils at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon were celebrating after achieving the best set of results in years.

A total of 21 pupils achieved top grades of A or A* in all their subjects and 35 per cent of all grades were either A* or A.

Headteacher Fergus Stewart said: “We salute our Class of 2019. Your achievements are well deserved.

“Your teachers, who have also worked so hard to support you, are incredibly proud of you and we all wish you every success in the next stage of your journeys at university, apprenticeships or work.”
