THIS year’s Bradford on Avon Flower and Produce show places an extra emphasis on craft among its usual rich array of categories.

The Bradford on Avon show is known for its slightly unusual categories and this year the Longest Piece of Bindweed makes its debut as well as the Hottest Chilli and Most Amusing Vegetable.

The show, which takes place on Sunday, September 8 from 2-4pm at St Margaret’s Hall, is encouraging those who may not be keen gardeners to have a go at making something original.

New craft categories include a patchwork item, embroidery, a greetings card made from recycled materials, a knitted, crocheted or sewn soft toy, and a tea cosy embellished with fruit or vegetables.

Show spokeswoman Joceline Bury said: "To encourage entries in the craft section, this year we have a new trophy: the Miss B Avon WI Craft Cup, to be awarded to the person gaining most points in the craft classes.

"The cookery section is always a popular one and this year homemade pork pies, cheese scones, fudge and gluten-free cake will be found alongside traditional Victoria sandwiches and fruit cakes, as well as the usual outstanding selection of homemade marmalade, jams and jellies."

The show starts at 2pm and runs until 4pm, and teas will be served in aid of Save the Children.

As always, thanks to the continuing support of Bradford on Avon Town Council, the show is free to enter and attend.

Schedules and entry forms are available from the Town Council offices and the Tourist Information Centre, and can also be downloaded at www.bradfordonavontowncouncil.gov.uk Closing date for return of entry forms is Thursday, September 5.
