Even the Olympics had to start somewhere.

One of Swindon's newest growth areas, Wichelstowe, will see people running cycling, playing tennis and pulling each other over in the first ever Wichelstowe games on Saturday

The competition, which will see teams of six go up against each other across six events, is being run by the Hall and Woodhouse pub, at the centre of the expanding development to the southwest of Swindon.

The day starts with a tennis competition at 9.15am, and will be followed by a footrace on a 3.5km course, climbing at Waitrose supermarket, canoeing on the canal, cycling and a tug of war.

Results will be announced and prizes awarded by 3.30pm.

There will also be a fun run for any insterested participants on the same course around the development area, and finishing at the heart of the village by Waitrose, setting off at 10.30am, 15 minutes behind the main team competition race.

Visitors will be able to cheer any of the 25 teams on, and also try out canoeing or climbing taster sessions for £2 or a short narrowboat trip on the canal which runs through the development.
