ROYAL Wootton Bassett Town boss Sam Collier felt his side’s performance on Saturday warranted a first Hellenic League Premier Division win of the season, so was therefore disappointed to settle for a 2-2 draw at home to Reading City.

The point was just Bassett’s second of the season after a testing opening four games in the league.

Collier’s side trailed at half-time as Matt Stockill put the visitors ahead from the penalty spot.

Callum Parsons levelled after the break, although Reading got their noses back in front when Stockill netted his second of the game.

Bassett were not to be denied a share of the spoils, though, and a fine free-kick from Caine Bradbury secured them a draw.

Manager Collier, however, thought his side deserved more than just a point.

“I thought we were well worth all three points. It is the best we have played since the season started,” said Collier.

“I was massively impressed with how we went about things. We passed it well and we were organised.

“Reading had a penalty, which was clearly not a penalty based on the replays we have seen, and they also scored a 35-yard screamer. Other than that, they didn’t have a sniff.

“We defended superbly but we just lacked that little bit of clinical edge in front of goal. If we had it, we could have had four or five goals.

“We have questioned whether we have got that togetherness as a group but that was answered at the weekend.

“When you’re out of form and go 1-0 down having dominated the game, you can think: ‘Here we go again, when are we going to get some luck?’

“But the lads got themselves back in the game. Then when Reading got the second goal, we did it again and dug ourselves out of that hole.

“Performance-wise, I was massively pleased.”

Elsewhere, Jamie Packer netted a second-half winner to fire Malmesbury Victoria to a 1-0 victory at Stonehouse Town in Division One West.

n PEWSEY Vale were unable to add to their solitary point in Sydenhams League Division One this season after they lost 4-1 at home to Newport (IoW) on Saturday.

Cameron Mackenzie netted for Vale but that was just a consolation as Liam Triggs’ double and one each for Connor Kelly and George Holmes won the points for Newport.
