STUNNING puppetry brought The Lion King to life on the stage of Bristol Hippodrome last night, with a dazzling array of music and dance inspired by the rhythms of Africa.

The auditorium was filled with a palpable excitement on opening night at the Hippodrome, with the sell out audience keenly waiting to see how the much loved classic, including some of Elton John's most memorable songs would unfold in front of them.

From the first note of Circle of Life the show engulfs you, African drums fill the air and elephants and rhinos rub shoulders with the crowd.

It was clear that this ensemble of more than 50 experienced performers were keen to get out there and show what they have spent months rehearsing for the first night of their UK tour.

The puppetry is funny, charming and beautiful, and athletic performers bringing every animal, from antelope to lion to life. Their physicality mirrored the movements of each well known character, from the band of three hysterical hyenas to the swooping Zazu, trying to keep the young lion prince Simba in check.

The action is joyful, dramatic and moving as Simba struggles to discover his place in the world.

By the second act Simba has grown up and American actor Dashaun Young has returned to reprise the leading role he first played in 2007 on the North American tour.

He bursts onto the stage with energy and charisma and his relationship was electric with childhood playmate lioness Nala, played by South African born Josslynn Hlenti.

Whether you love the Disney film or have never seen it before, you will have a fantastic night out at The Lion King.

A standing ovation finished the show, that continues in Bristol until November. Tickets from £20-£100.
