CYCLIST Alex Clough is appealing for witnesses after he was knocked off his bike on a roundabout on the outskirts of Devizes.

Mr Clough, 26, from Bishops Cannings, near Devizes has reported the accident to the police after he says the car driver involved initially stopped but then drover off without exchanging details.

He was left with a broken left leg and faces weeks away from his job as a night care worker at the newly opened Briggs Lodge care home in London Road, Devizes.

He said: “I approached the roundabout near Cannings Hill Garage at about 7.20pm on September 30.

“My bike had its lights on, I was wearing a high vis jacket and I also had lights on my back pack. I made sure nothing was coming from my right and was on the roundabout when suddenly this car came from my left.

“I had a few seconds when I knew he was going to hit me but couldn’t do anything about it. I was hit on my left side and fell on the ground. I think adrenalin must have kicked in as I managed to get up and reach the pavement. My bike is completely broken.

He says the driver of a dark coloured 4x4 vehicle stopped on the roundabout and came over to him but then got back into his car and drove off.

He said: “He told me he didn’t see me but as I had so many lights on I don’t know how.

“I don’t want to be vindictive over this but it would be nice to get compensation to pay for a new bike and the money I am losing by not being able to work. I had only been in the job a couple of weeks.

Wiltshire police have appealed for witnesses. A spokesman said: “The cyclist was riding towards Devizes from Horton.

“While going around the roundabout the dark coloured car struck the bike causing damage and injuring the rider.

“If you witnessed the collision or have any information contact PC HAMEL 2848 at Devizes Borough Police Station via 101.”
