FLOOD barriers have been installed next to the River Avon at Bradford on Avon as experts and volunteers continue to keep an eye on water levels.

The Environment Agency installed demountable temporary flood barriers at the Bull Pit in Bradford on Avon as the river water levels continued to rise.

At Staverton and Holt, the B3105 is partially flooded but the new flood gates have not yet been put into use to stop reckless drivers from driving through.

An agency spokesman said: "Recent heavy and persistent rain fall has resulted in high river levels, which are continuing to rise.

"We expect to meet flood warning levels later this afternoon into this evening (October 13) before dropping back overnight.

"Further rain is forecast today (October 14) afternoon into the evening which maybe locally heavy there is some uncertainty in the location and timings.

"Demountable temporary barriers are currently being deployed in Bradford on Avon.

"We are monitoring the weather forecasts and how this may further impact rivers. We will update this as the situation changes."

The agency said further rain forecast for Monday which may be heavy at times. This may cause river levels to rise again so this flood alert will remain in force.

It added: “There is a possibility that some properties are at risk of flooding over the next few days but we are monitoring the levels closely and will ensure that we keep this message up to date as the weather changes.

“There is further potentially heavy rain forecast for Tuesday which could result in river levels rising higher.

"Flooding of low-lying roads, property and farmland is possible. We will continue to check the rivers for potential blockages and are ensuring trash screens are kept clear of debris."
