FLESH-eating plants didn’t deter shoppers at Avonfield Nursery this week as it was just a prop for a photo call for a local drama group.

Trowbridge Amateur Operatic Society are bringing the Little Shop of Horrors comedy rock musical to town next week.

The group used the Hilperton-based plant nursery to provide back drops for their forthcoming autumn show.

Little Shop of Horrors is a rock musical with music and lyrics by Alan Menken and a book by Howard Ashman.

The story follows a hapless florist shop worker who raises a plant that feeds on human blood and flesh.

Meek shop assistant Seymour is played by Karl Montgomery-Williams he has eyes for co-worker Audrey played by Connie Knight.

During a total eclipse, he discovers an unusual plant he names Audrey II, which feeds only on human flesh and blood.

The growing plant attracts a great deal of business for the previously struggling florist store .

The story is also told through the eyes of the Ronnettes Bee Partington, Tasha Harvey, Daisy Woodruffe who sing the narration.

TAOS chairman Claire Borovac said: “It’s a comedy horror with great rock and roll music, set in 1960 Skid Row in New York.”

“In this production we have singers who were previously in youth group shows, together with five new members on stage.

“Our lead character Karl has been nominated for a National Singing Teacher Award with Stagecoach.

“He’s currently the Performing Arts Lecturer at Wiltshire College so is no stranger to the Arc.”

The music is in the style of early 1960s rock and roll, doo-wop and early Motown, and includes several well-known tunes, including the title song, “Skid Row (Downtown)”, “Somewhere That’s Green” and “Suddenly, Seymour”.

The production is at the Arc Theatre from Tuesday November 26 to Saturday November 30.
