MARLBOROUGH in Bloom could fold if it does not get more members.

It wants to carry on its winning streak of golds at Britain in Bloom – the town has won the top honour for the past four years.

But organisers are struggling to get people to help and several committee members have stood down.

Chairman of Marlborough in Bloom for the past three years Ann Lovett is one of those calling it a day.

She said: “We’re in urgent need of volunteers. There is a worry it won’t continue as we’re struggling to fill the positions.

“Our town looks absolutely beautiful and everyone does their best. A few people have stepped down so we’re looking for more. Fundraising is needed to keep it going, boxes need planting, a photographer is needed and the website needs running.

“When people think of Marlborough they think of flowers but it’s more than that.”

The committee has five members left but more are needed.

Britain in Bloom judge and committee member Richard Beale said: “We need people with a fresh outlook.

"They don’t just have to be interested in plants, it’s about caring about Marlborough and making it a better place.

“We have won gold for four years. We are judged against a standard and Marlborough achieved it.”

Clare Harris, assistant town clerk said: “The town council will be forging ahead in the new year and would welcome any support from the community, be that local clubs, groups, shops, businesses or residents to help with this year's entry. We're delighted to be entering the South West in Bloom competition in 2020 and were completely overwhelmed to be invited to enter the National Britain in Bloom competition too.”
