Trowbridge Sports Centre has been closed indefinitely for urgent repair works to its structural framework.

The centre closed on Christmas Eve leaving swim and premium members unable to access its pool, diving boards and sports hall facilities. Managers for its operator, Places Leisure, are unable to say when it will re-open.

The centre in Frome Road,Trowbridge, was shut on December 24 after structural examinations exposed the need for urgent remedial works.

Places Leisure is urging swim and premium members to use its other local sports centres run while the investigations and works take place.

James Dennison, from Places Leisure, said: “At this time we are unable to provide any fixed timescales as to when the centre will be open again.

“During the closure, as a Swim or Premium member, you are still able to use our other local leisure centre facilities."

It is understood the issue which forced the closure is related to the integrity of the steel-framed structure of the building, which was built in 1965 and refurbished 14 years ago.

Wiltshire Council, which owns the centre, has so far not confirmed exactly what the structural problem is.

A council spokesman said: “The site has been closed as a precaution while further investigations are undertaken and remedial actions agreed.

“The site will remain closed until the remedial actions are finalised and implemented. It’s difficult at this stage to provide any fixed timescales or costs.”

Cllr Allison Bucknell, cabinet member for leisure at Wiltshire Council, said: “Unfortunately due to the need for urgent structural works we have had to close Trowbridge Sports Centre.

“We are very sorry for the disruption and inconvenience this may cause. We encourage all those wanting to use leisure facilities to visit our neighbouring local sites.”

Places Leisure also runs sports and leisure centres in Bradford on Avon, Chippenham, Malmesbury, Melksham, Royal Wootton Bassett, Warminster and Westbury.
