GREGGS has started the New Year by expanding their vegan menu with a new vegan steak bake.

It’s a follow up to the well-received vegan sausage roll which launched this time last year.

Shoppers in Trowbridge have been able to try the new taste, as the store in The Shires is one of those nationwide which has been baking the new range since January 2.

The Times went into the centre to ask shoppers what they thought of it, and also to see what people in Trowbridge think of the Veganuary movement, which is asking people to try going vegan for a month to help save the planet.

Aarron Wordley gave his thoughts, saying: “I would never go vegan it’s not for me so I’m not doing Veganuary. But I don’t mind the odd vegan meal and do it that way.”

Katie Wells said: “I think for Veganuary it’s a good idea for people to try it for a lifestyle change but I’m not sure it’s going to make much of a difference just doing it for a month. What I find is all vegan food seems to come in plastic packaging too.”

Aaron Tozier said: “I think people should go for Veganuary and even better if they can do it all the time as there are a lot of reasons to do it so the environment, health and animals. I personally do it for animal reasons as even with being vegetarian the dairy industry still kills animals.

“Why wouldn’t you do it if you could? It’s so popular and easy to be vegan now so the stereotype of having to talk about it is going away. It has boomed and come out of nowhere so it’s now a big thing but it’s price compatible too.”

Laurence Dudley said: “I don’t know about Veganuary as there are different levels to it but we need to eat less meat so why not? It makes you wonder why people are trying to charge more as things should be the same.”

We also asked our readers online what they thought of the vegan steak bake, and got rather a mixed response.

Paola Hewat said: “Love the vegan sausage not roll. Super nice pastry and no grease. Hoping this one is the same.”

Les Bingham said: “Surely it is either vegan or steak, can’t be both.”

Josey Jump said: “If it is anything like their sausage roll it will be hideous.”

Ashley Stevens said: “Why is it called a Steak Bake.
Heather Reilly Edwards said: “It’s lush.”

The steak bake costs £1.50, with the vegan alternative selling for £1.55. If you want to try one, it’s available in The Shires, Trowbridge, and at Cradle Bridge, in Melksham off Commerce Way and on the High Street and in Bath Road, Warminster.
