I’M a sucker for a bargain, particularly when it comes to food.

Only on the day of visiting Sally Pussey’s in Royal Wootton Bassett, I got a text from a member of staff and friend telling me to try out the burgers – on any Monday it’s buy one get one free.

And it was a Monday – excellent.

I had only visited Sally Pussey’s once before. I’d taken part in the muddiest of mud runs towards London and tucked into one of the gastropub’s classic roasts afterwards.

Hardly a cloud was in the sky that day. Myself and my partner Lilly visited in quite different weather this time, cars were stuck doing 40mph if they dared in appalling rain westbound on the M4 from Berkshire.

It was quite nice therefore to get a cheerful welcome from the bar staff and the lady who served us food throughout the night.

Sally Pussey’s is not plonked in the middle of a housing estate or town centre. The drinking element of the evening is therefore immediately taken away if you’ve travelled by car – which the majority of customers do.

But it’s by no means remote, located just a couple of minutes’ drive from Junction 16 of the M4 or a short walk from the east side of Royal Wootton Bassett on the A3102. There is a bus stop opposite too.

There is plenty of free parking in addition to private hire rooms, so it’s customer-friendly and focused.

Sally Pussey’s serves breakfast, lunch and dinner while also hosting a buffet and Christmas dinners.

We were there for dinner and, as mentioned, took advantage of the BOGOF Monday burgers – that was after we finished off a few starters.

The nachos (£5) served with salsa, sour cream and guacamole were exactly what you’d expect for your cash, and the portion size was great.

We also chose the garlic crispy mushrooms (£4.90) and crisp halloumi fries with cranberry chutney (£6).

I don’t know what they did to that cranberry chutney, but it was to die for – one of the tastiest starters I have had anywhere.

The mushrooms were good also. The three above items were served to catch the eye – attention to detail from those in the kitchen didn’t go unnoticed.

Starters polished off and washed down by a couple of J20s, we moved on to the mains.

There are six burgers to choose from – five meat and one vegan. The vegan option is a blend of spinach, butternut squash and sweet potato, not for me – or Lil.

Lil went for the half pound beefburger (£10.95) while I went for the Cotswold lamb burger (£11.95). Mine was served with Somerset brie and red onion chutney, which I found quite sweet but it still went down no issue.

The beef option came with bacon and melted cheddar. To be honest, we underestimated the starter portion sizes and couldn’t quite finish off the chips that are served with all burgers – but they were cooked excellently.

The total cost came to just over £30, including drinks. Not bad at all for a chilled night out in good company with decent music to match Sally Pussey’s chilled-out mood.

I would thoroughly recommend for multiple occasions. Business meetings with those travelling from the city, a family Sunday roast or just a midweek treat – Sally Pussey’s caters for all and it is no surprise to me that the venue is attracting its customers back for more.
