A Malmesbury primary school has come out top in the reading league tables.

And it has been congratulated for getting top marks in the stage 2 SATS results.

Staff at Sherston Church of England Primary School have been sent a letter from the Minister of State for School Standards.

Nick Gibb, MP wrote to the head teacher of the Knockdown Road school, Sue Leyden praising the achievement.

The key stage 2 SATS results published in December saw 100% of the pupils reaching or exceeding the expected standard in reading.

It puts this local village school in the top 1% of the country in achievement in reading.

The letter goes on to thank Mrs Leyden, and her team for their work in continuing the drive towards higher academic standards.

"I am very proud of all our hard working staff and children," she said.

"This is very much a team effort."

Sherston Primary school has 146 pupils.
