A WOMAN driver has been released under police investigation after a pensioner in her 80s was trapped under a reversing car.

The casualty was named locally as Marge Brown, a regular user of the McColl's convenience store where the accident occurred last Friday.

Police said: "At approximately 5.40pm, the driver of a Citroen C1 was reversing in the road outside the McColl's shop in Dursley Road when the vehicle collided with a pedestrian.

"The pedestrian – a local woman in her 80s – became trapped under the vehicle as a result and had to be released by the fire service.

"She was taken to the Royal United Hospital in Bath with multiple injuries."

"The driver of the Citroen, a local woman in her 40s, was arrested at the scene for drink driving and was taken to Melksham custody for further questioning.

"She has since been released under investigation while further enquiries are conducted."

Mrs Brown, of Studley Rise, Trowbridge, was released within minutes by two fire crews from Trowbridge fire station.

On Saturday, McColl's staff declined to comment.

Matthew Hulbert, 50, landlord of the nearby Dursley Arms, said he had rushed outside after hearing the sirens of emergency service vehicles.

“There was a large crowd of people outside and someone had already phoned for the ambulance. I saw the elderly woman trapped underneath the car. All you could see was her head near the back wheel.

“By that time, there was a big crowd and the emergency services were there. There was nothing I could do, so I just went back inside the pub.”

Some residents and local councillors are now calling for more speed calming measures on Dursley Road, which has a 20mph speed restriction.

Drynham ward member, Cllr Andrew Bryant, is trying to get pavement parked banned, adding: “Wiltshire Council will not do this as a separate order is required for each road. Over the entire county this would mean thousands of roads.”

He is trying to set up a Community Speed Watch team and get funding for traffic calming, including speed bumps.

Police want to hear from anyone who witnessed the collision, or anyone who may have dash cam footage or CCTV footage.
