A pupil at St Laurence School in Bradford on Avon has been tested for Coronavirus.

The pupil recently returned from a skiing holiday in northern Italy and is now self-isolating.

The results of the tests will be known tomorrow.

In a letter to parents and carers, the school's head teacher Fergus Stewart said: “We wish to update you that a student is currently awaiting test results for Coronavirus. Results will be known on Tuesday, 3rd March.

“Please note the student’s family were ill whilst the student was away in northern Italy on the ski trip and has since become ill with similar symptoms at the weekend.

“However, due to recent travel in northern Italy and the symptoms of fever/cold, a swab was taken. The student is self-isolating until the results are known.

“As advised by Public Health England, we continue to be open and will take further advice once results are known.

“Please be assured that we are monitoring this closely each day and continue to follow the recommended guidelines.

“Again, please remind your children about the importance of good hand hygiene and see the latest advice from Public Health England.”

It is not known if any other pupils at the 1,200-pupil school have been tested for the virus.

On Sunday, it was confirmed that a member of staff at St Mary's Primary School in Tetbury had become infected with Coronavirus while in Northern Italy.

That case is linked to another person living in Gloucestershire who has also become infected.

Two pupils at Malmesbury School have also been placed in self-isolation as a precaution against Coronavirus.

Neither student has been diagnosed as contracting the virus but have isolated themselves at home to look out for symptoms.

The Coronavirus health crisis deepened on Sunday when new cases were reported – bringing the total number who have tested positive in the UK to 39.

Four new UK cases were announced today, all of whom had travelled to Italy which has seen the largest outbreak in Europe.

The new cases are from Hertfordshire, Devon and Kent, on top of those from London, Essex, West Yorkshire and Greater Manchester, as well as the second case from Gloucestershire.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson chaired a COBRA meeting this morning and warned afterwards that the UK could see a “very significant expansion” in the number of cases of Coronavirus.

He said the possibility of further transmission of the virus was “clearly on the cards.”

Officials have not ruled out introducing special measures to contain the virus, such as closing schools, locking down cities and recalling doctors out of retirement.
