A TEAM from 1st Broughton Gifford & Holt Cubs won the right to carry the Wiltshire West Cub Scouts district flag at their St George’s Day event on Sunday, April 26 in Trowbridge.

The winning team of Phoebe King and Josh Hart were joined by a Warminster Tigers Cub Harry Randall after some children pulled out of Sunday’s March 15 challenge event because of the Coronavirus outbreak.

Twenty-five cubs from six packs across the district enjoyed the challenge of competing to carry the flag in a series of five activities designed by their leaders to test their initiative and scouting skills.

The teams had to complete five bases, all of which are part of the Cub Scout training programme.

District Commissioner Chris Broom said: “The cubs had great fun moving from base to base, cooking outside on an altar fir backwoods style.

“They cooked and enjoyed twists, put on some delicious toppings, jam, chocolate and butterscotch sauces, all eaten very quickly.

“In Night Sky they looked at constellations while Personal Safety emphasised the importance of online safety with lots of scenarios, very important with gaming and social media, stranger-danger, drink and drugs, rubbish tips and weapon safety.

Good Food gave them ideas for a good diet and food groups. In Science they made potato batteries, fascinating and intriguing.”

"All the activities were organised and presented by the leaders and were thoroughly enjoyed by the 25 cubs that took part, especially the game of skittles that finished off the event.”
