A METHODIST chapel in a village near Devizes could become an arts centre or museum after the final ever service was held 245 years after it was first opened by John Wesley.

The Wesleyan Chapel in Seend had the honour of being the oldest one of its type still holding regular worship.

But as the congregation had dwindled to just five stalwarts the district committee decided it had no choice but to close it.

Now the church is having talks with Seend Community Land and Asset Trust to discuss possibilities for the future of the listed building.

The trust has suggested using the single storey chapel as a museum or arts centre. A number of villagers have voiced concerns about it being turned into a house.

Treasurer and property secretary Les Warren said: “It was a very sad day when we held the last service but there was no choice really.

“It had been under discussion for some time. There were just not enough people to warrant keeping it open so the anniversary seemed like a fitting time to hold the final service.”

He said the Charity Commissioners would insist the building, which has no running water, heating or sewerage would have to be sold for the market price.

Mr Warren said: “The trust is keen to become involved and seem confident it could get planning permission. There is some upset in the village over any idea of it becoming a dwelling.”

On March 8 the chapel was for once full with 85 people taking part in the final service.

The Rev. Wendy Tucker the minister for the Calne area led the service and the Rev Ward Jones, retired district chairman of the Bristol District, gave the sermon.

Following the service people went to the Community Hall for tea and refreshments and had the chance to reminisce about the many years the Chapel had been in use.

Mr Warren, who has been involved with the chapel since 1973, said: John Wesley, founder of the Methodist Church, opened the chapel in March 1775.”

He said Methodists from Seend would now probably travel to Bromham or Whitley. Regular services are also held in Devizes.

The next meeting of the Seend Community Land and Asset Trust will be on April 14 at the Irene Usher Memorial Pavilion at 7:30 pm. Plans for Park Farm affordable homes will also be discussed.
