COUNCILLORS in Warminster have voted to go ahead with plans to clean the town’s war memorial at a cost of £4,400 plus VAT.

They made the decision at their full council meeting on Monday, March 16 after postponing a decision in January to request more information on the memorial's state.

They had been recommended by officers to accept a quote of £4,400 plus VAT – making a total of £5,280 - from specialist contractors Minerva.

Councillors said in January they wanted to investigate its condition more thoroughly before making a final decision.

Officers were instructed to investigate the cost of cleaning the war memorial at Portway Corner following the Remembrance service last November.

The monument and surrounding paving was last cleaned in 2013 by Minerva, a specialist stone conservation company approved by Historic England.

The cleaning is specialised work and can only be carried out by a contractor with the right skills.
