Following a number of incidents in which people were spotted deliberately setting fires, firefighters have branded would-be-arsonists 'appalling'.

On Tuesday evening, crews from Hyndburn fire station were called to several small fires at the Coppice in Accrington.

A spokesperson for the fire service said: "The incident was at 8.39pm on Tuesday, and crews were called to a number of small fires at the Coppice.

"Firefighters used beaters, and aqua packs were used to extinguish the fire."

Similar incidents had been reported on Monday evening, and firefighters were called to the same area after a grass bank had been set alight.

The spokesperson continued: "Crews were also called at 7.39pm on Monday with one fire engine from Hyndburn station sent to a fire on a grass bank.

"Firefighters used beaters to extinguish the blaze and the fire service and police are now investigating the cause of both fires."

It is believed that on Tuesday, fire crews had received reports from concerned residents that people had been spotted setting the fires.

The spokesperson added: "It is appalling that people wish to aggravate an already difficult situation.

"We ask those people responsible to think about the wider consequences of their actions.

"Fires tie up valuable emergency service resources which could have a serious consequences for other people in the community who may genuinely really need the help of firefighters, police or paramedics.

"Additionally, their actions are not helping to contain the spread of the coronavirus and they are putting themselves, family and friends at risk.

"It is vitally important that people stay at home which will help save lives.

"There is no need to take matches, lighters and barbecues outside when carrying out exercise."
