IF you live in Bradford on Avon brace yourself for a wave of noise at 3.15pm today (Friday), as 63 excited Year 6 pupils from Christ Church Primary give tongue after completing a sponsored silence.

The youngsters will all fall silent on a video call for 15 minutes from 3pm – giving their mums and dads some much-needed peace and quiet.

They will mark the end of their silence, which is raising money to fund the leavers party they hope to enjoy if school resumes before the end of the summer term, by making a lot of noise at the end of the call - letting off steam because of the lockdown and social distancing.

The sponsored silence was organised by Beth Stanger, in class 6AH, who wrote to the headteacher Neil Baker and got permission to hold it in school.

She said: “Despite not being physically together during the silence, I still think it will be a nice bonding experience.

“The more money we raise, the better the party will be. I apologise in advance for the noise when we finish!”

The money raised will pay for their end of year leavers party and their Christ Church leavers hoodies - contributions from friends and family mean the fund currently stands at £416.

Beth’s friends Anoushka McGrail, 10, in class 6AH, and Sophie Maidment, 11, in class 6AD are among those taking part.

Sophie said: “It will be quite hard staying quiet, I’m not usually the quiet type. But I’m looking forward to help raise money for our year.

“It’s been quite hard being off school; it’s really weird not seeing my friends every day.

“I’m looking forward to making lots of noise at the end of the sponsored silence and I’m going to see if I can hear my friends across town.”
