A MOTORWAY stopping point for truckers is now going the extra mile to help villagers get essential food stuffs.

Draycott Stores at Chippenham Pit Stop, close to the M4, is filling the gap for those finding it difficult to get baking supplies.

It is now stocking flour and eggs which have been in short supply for those living in Sutton |Benger, Christian Malford, Draycott Cerne and Kington Langley.

Pit Stop general manager Lee Fenn said the lorry stop just off Junction 17 of the M4 already had access to local wholesalers and suppliers of fresh produce and other necessities through operating both their restaurant and shop.

He said: “So when we heard local people were finding it increasingly difficult to buy flour and eggs, we decided to step in and lend a helping hand.

“We’re ordering 25 kilo sacks of locally produced flower and repacking into kilo bags for local people and have also stepped up our order of large eggs from another local, supplier.

“Customers are really appreciating our efforts and are playing their part by social distancing and ordering other provisions.

Pit Stop managing director David Hatherell said gearing up to help both local people and truckers in time of need was very much in line with the company’s ethos.

He said: “We have hundreds of truckers pulling in during the day and up to 100 staying overnight, placing their orders and taking food back to eat in their cabs and also using our toilet and hot shower facilities.

“Its great that we are able to go that extra mile both for our truckers and now are growing base of local village customers.”

When the coronavirus emergency first began to bite Pit Stop earned many plaudits by making it easy for drivers making vital deliveries to still be able to stop and use facilities at a time when many other places were closing.
