LIBERAL Democrats councillors in Bradford on Avon have re-ignited a campaign to bring in a one-way system.

They have held talks with local highways group, Streets Ahead, following concerns about social distancing during the Covid-19 crisis while using the town's narrow pavements.

The three Lib Dems - Jim Lynch, Sarah Gibson and Jennie Parker - have raised the issue again to help make social distancing easier.

They said: "Options were discussed at the town council highways committee meeting on May 12th, and the committee backed a proposal from Sarah Gibson to ask Wiltshire Council to consider a temporary one-way system up Silver Street, as well as alternate one-way traffic over the town bridge managed by traffic lights.

"This will enable wider pavements for pedestrians to maintain two metres’ distance without stepping into the roads, which are becoming busier as traffic levels rise again."

The town council last year consulted residents about introducing a one-way system as part of plans to improvement traffic flow and management through the town.

The council is still waiting for Wiltshire Council's highways department to propose some solutions to the issues of congestion and traffic volume.
