WESSEX Water has U-turned on its plans to build a £2m sewage pumping station under a play park.

Company officials were sent away with a flea in their ear by the town council in September after they ignored advice to consult people in Royal Wootton Bassett over the scheme.

It has now submitted an application to build an underground tank on private land next to the park in New Road.

Wessex Water’s Jonathan Barker, who is coordinating the work, said: “We’ve listened to the local community and came up with a solution to the flooding problem that doesn’t impact on New Road recreation park.

“Our new sewer will run beneath the north west corner of the park, but access and use of the facilities will be unaffected. There will also be minimal visual impact once work is complete.”

The scheme would see road and lane closures in Westbury Park and New Road.
