ELEVEN nurses and carers at a Trowbridge care home have been honoured at an annual awards day for staff.

The event was held at The Wingfield in Trowbridge to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the birth of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing.

The awards were made on International Nurses Day on May 12 to celebrate nurses and care staff around the world.

Nurse Jacqueline Batten and deputy manager Mike Percival-Saludsong, who were on duty on that day, received a bouquet of flowers for female nurses and a bottle of wine for the male nurses.

Residents were happy to get involved by hosting the annual awards for the home’s staff.

The World Health Organization designated 2020 as the first-ever global Year of the Nurse and Midwife, because it also marks the bicentennial of Florence Nightingale’s birth in Italy.

Gail Stone, The Wingfield’s general manager, said: “Our nurses and staff are hard-working, dedicated, and passionate about caring for others, and that compassion and commitment has shone through even more these past few weeks."

"They continue to work tirelessly and I’m proud of the professionalism and duty of care they uphold.

“All their efforts are focused on creating an enjoyable environment for our residents, so it’s nice to take this time to show our appreciation in return.”

Resident ambassador, Avis, who lives at The Wingfield, said: “The staff here spend so much time and energy looking after us, it’s been lovely to show just how much we appreciate them and they do a smashing job.”

The Wingfield care home is run by Barchester Healthcare, one of the UK’s largest care providers, which is committed to delivering personalised care across its care homes and hospitals. It provides residential care, nursing care and dementia care.

The home is playing its part in the wider care sector and supporting the NHS where possible. It is still taking admissions for those that need care in the next four weeks.
