THE Warrington Guardian has been shortlisted for two awards at the Society of Editors Regional Press Awards 2019.

The newspaper is among the nominees for Paid for Weekly/ Sunday Newspaper of the Year Above 50,000 Monthly Reach alongside titles including the MEN on Sunday, the Bucks Free Press and The Reading Chronicle.

And for the second year in a row the team has also been shortlisted for the Social Media Team of the Year alongside daily titles including BirminghamLive, ChronicleLive, NottinghamshireLive, Manchester Evening News and WalesOnline.

It is the first time the title has been nominated for two awards at this prestigious ceremony.

The Warrington Guardian was shortlisted for its continued strong audience growth and loyal readership, as well as its commitment and passion for local news.

Its unrivalled coverage of the Wire's victory in the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley last August also featured prominently in the nominations.

Sister title St Helens Star has also been shortlisted for Free Weekly Newspaper of the Year for the second year in a row.

They are up against Camden New Journal, Chronicle Week, Islington Tribune, Jewish News and Slough and Windsor Express.

Celebrating the best of British regional and local newspaper journalism in 2019 for print, online and any other news platform, the awards would have been handed out during a ceremony in London today.

Due to the coronavirus crisis the event was cancelled earlier this year and winners will instead be announced on June 19.
