A man was found to have nicked a postman’s jacket – after cops were called to reports of a damaged cash machine.

CCTV showed Jody Sidelnik trying to use the cash point at the Sainsbury’s supermarket in Devizes in the early hours of June 2.

Prosecutor Kate Prince told Basingstoke Magistrates’ Court the 38-year-old tried to open the cash dispenser. When he failed he kicked and punched the ATM twice.

Police caught up with him and found him in possession of a red Royal Mail jacket that he had apparently taken from a postal van parked in Sidmouth Street car park.

He refused to engage with a police interview and turned down the opportunity to speak to a solicitor.

Speaking in his own defence, Sidelnik said: “I’m sorry. I have a lot of memory issues. I have got some mental health issues.”

He said there had been “a lot of confusion” around him on the night he was arrested. He told the judge: “I apologise for wasting your time with this. I’m trying to come home. I’m trying to do what I’m going to do. I’m going to leave it with you. I’m sure you’re capable of doing the right thing.”

Sidelnik, of Washington Street, Birmingham, pleaded guilty to theft and criminal damage.

District Judge Tim Pattinson bailed him to appear before Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court on July 7, when he faces other matters.
