WILTSHIRE police are warning of large scale gatherings this weekend - despite Solstice celebrations being curtailed at Stone Henge and Avebury.

They say enquiries are currently being conducted to determine the scale of this event and the resources required to disperse any crowds and ensure no offences are committed.

In a statement on Facebook it said: "There will be an increased police presence in the area over the weekend as officers conduct high visibility and reassurance patrols and please be reassured that we will take action against those who fail to comply.

We would like to remind the public that large scale events which have not been granted the relevant permissions by authorities are illegal and will be dealt with as such.

It is also important to stress that government restrictions on socialising in large groups still remain in place and it is important that social distancing is adhered to at all times.

We fully understand the inconvenience and negative impact incidents of this nature can have on anyone living in close proximity and we would encourage landowners in the south of the county to ensure their land is secure to help prevent incidents of this nature taking place.
