THE gardens of a magnificent and historic Grade 1 listed Jacobean Hall hidden within the centre of Bradford on Avon - home to the late Dr Alex Moulton - are being re-opened to the public.

The Alex Moulton Charitable Trust is offering a beautiful outdoor space for visitors and enjoy and explore as lockdown restrictions are relaxed.

The Open Garden events will run from 2pm to 5pm each Friday from July 3 until the end of September.

Steve Missen, the Trust’s chairman, said:“Visitors can expect to see mature redwoods, manicured yews, fascinating architecture and winding pathways.

“Left to explore the gardens at their leisure, visitors can learn about The Hall and the Moulton family from the information boards throughout the grounds at points of interest, highlighting the historical significance of garden features, views and buildings.

“We can’t wait to share the grounds and their stories with the public and to offer a lovely space for visitors to enjoy in Bradford on Avon.”

Home of the late Dr Alex Moulton, famed for creating the Moulton bicycle and innovative car suspension systems, The Hall is of great importance to Britain’s industrial and engineering heritage.

Dr Moulton’s great-grandfather, Stephen Moultonwas responsible for bringing rubber manufacture from America to Bradford on Avon in the 1840s, instigating Britain’s booming rubber industry.

The Trust relies on a team of volunteer gardeners to help restore and maintain the grounds surrounding The Hall, and is fundraising towards the cost of preparing for re-opening.

This includes funding the restoration of the historic Rock Garden and beginning work to reinstate the once grand Dutch Garden.

Trust staff have been working hard to ensure social distancing and sanitation measures are in place ready for re-opening in July.

Due to the restrictions resulting from the coronavirus pandemic, visitors will need to pre-book their tickets online to help reduce the need for physical contact and to ensure that visitor numbers can be controlled.

More open garden dates may be added in due course. Tickets will be on sale one week in advance of the open grounds events and can be booked via moultontrust.org/whats-on.
