THE founder of one of Oxford’s best-known taxi companies has died.

Anthony Green – fondly known by friends and colleagues as Tony and 'Greeners' – was the managing director of 001 Taxis for for more than 50 years.

He died peacefully in his sleep on June 26 at the age of 82.

His funeral will take place tomorrow at Oxford Crematorium on Bayswater Road at 11am.

Mr Green’s wishes were to depart from 001 Taxis rank at 108 St Aldates.

A cortege will leave there at 10.15am and proceed along the High Street to the crematorium travelling through Headington.

Due to the current coronavirus restrictions the service will be a small family affair, however, a huge turnout of taxi drivers are expected to turn up to escort Mr Green on his last journey.

Assistant manager at 001 Taxis Belinda Barker descried him as a ‘very well respected man’, who was liked by everybody that knew him.

Ms Barker, who worked with Mr Green for almost 30 years, added: “Tony was the man behind the family-run empire.

"He was such a character and it was a pleasure to work with him for such a long time.

"I think Thursday may bring Oxford to a bit of a standstill.”
