More than £3m was given to Wiltshire Council in the government’s third round of additional coronavirus funding.

The council said the latest government cash will ‘significantly reduce’ its prospects of issuing a section 114 notice.

The £3,467,099 grant is part of the latest round of funding and part of a £500m pot to cover the financial impact of coronavirus on councils across England.

Despite this the council admitted challenges still lay ahead and predicts an overspend of £36.73m.

In recent weeks has reverted to a single chief executive, and has reduced the number of cabinet members and portfolio holders in a bid to save cash.

Cllr Pauline Church, cabinet member for finance and procurement, said: "The additional funding from the government will certainly ease the pressure, but we are still facing significant challenges ahead and more funding will be required. Locally, we are leading on the recovery from Covid-19 so we are working hard to ensure we have the right resources in the right areas to help the county get back strongly on its feet.

"We await with interest to see how the government will allocate the additional funding and will continue to work closely with them to try to ensure the county gets what it needs."

Since the outbreak of Covid-19 Wiltshire Council has received £29,008,806 in emergency funding.
