POLICE closed the M4 after a single vehicle crash earlier today.

All emergency services were at the scene as they worked to free a man trapped in a car around midday.

Drivers were to use other routes as the junction 17 and 18 between Chippenham and Bath closed in both directions for hours

The motorway reopened around 1.30pm.

Highways England tweeted: “#M4 Westbound between J17 #Chippenham and J18 #Bath is now OPEN. However there are lane 3 closures on both carriageways due to the severity of the central reservation barrier damage. Please pass through with caution."

A spokesman for Wiltshire Police said: "We were called just after 11am today to a single vehicle collision on the westbound carriageway.

"One male driver was trapped in a car. Fire were at the scene to release him. Ambulance was also there."

A spokeswoman for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire said: "We were called to the M4 westbound between J17 and J18 this morning at 11.25am for a single vehicle RTC in which the car had ended up on its roof.

"Three crews attended, two from Chippenham and one from Malmesbury, but were only needed to make the scene safe. The stop came at 11.54am. It's believed the male casualty was taken to hospital by ambulance."
